The American Taco vs. The Real Taco

Antonia Meneses Gomez, Staff Writer

When you think of a taco, what comes to mind is probably a hard taco shell stuffed with ground beef, lettuce and tomato. But what you don’t know is, that is not a real taco. It’s not a real Mexicantaco, I would call it an Americanized taco if anything. You are probably very confused, that’s why I am going to create a chart to break the ingredients down into categories. That way it’ll be easier to see the difference, the big difference.

Moe’s Taco Mexican Taco
Tortilla Flour or Hard Shell Soft Corn
Meat Ground beef, Chicken, Pork, or Tofu Steak, Carnitas, al Pastor, Lengua
Toppings Beans, Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Salsa Onions, Cilantro, Salsa verde/roja, Lemon juice

Huge difference, right?

So next time you say you want to go out to Mexican, and show up at Tijuana Flats, Chipotle, or Taco Bell, remind yourself that this is just the American version of “Mexican cuisine” and is nothing like the real experience.
