Herjot Cheema

Herjot Cheema is one of Green Hope’s nominees for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship.

Describe how you fit into the four pillars of the Morehead-Cain scholarship: Leadership, Scholarship, Character, Physical Vigor.

These four pillars are seen in my variety of activities and accomplishments. I am a Science Olympiad Captain and have helped lead this team to success. Additionally, I teach at a non-profit in Durham that helps lower-income students receive a better understanding and education. I also have expanded my knowledge in other science fields by completing a NCSSM online program. As for physical vigor, I have been running with the Green Hope Cross Country team for two years and I have taken part in a cultural dance team since sixth grade. It is a type of Indian folk dance called Bhangra and I am a captain for this group. Throughout my involvement with these activities, I have demonstrated the four pillars of Leadership, Scholarship, Character, and Physical Vigor.

What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?

I am most proud of my work with the non-profit in Durham. These workshops allow less fortunate students to receive a better education than offered at their school. I am honored that I get to help these kids and spread my knowledge I have been fortunate enough to receive.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?

Most people don’t know that I have a passion for music. I can’t play many instruments, but I am eager to learn and try lots of new instruments. Music has played a big part in my life because it is a way to express myself.

What advice do you have for students who want to apply in the future?

Quality over quantity. This is the best advice for anyone. You want to find a few clubs and activities that interest you and get passionate about them. This way you can build your experience and grow in what you care about most.

What qualities do you think stood out from your Morehead application?

My research experience really stood out. I worked at a lab at UNC’s pharmacy department. It was an incredible experience where I got to work with head pharmacists on antibiotic treatments. Experiences like this have set me about from my peers.
