On Saturday, November 17th, the Green Hope men’s soccer team won their second state championship in three years. The Falcons bested the Myers Park Mustangs 4-1, led by a two-goal performance from Sam Durand.

The stadium was packed with a passionate crowd, ready to cheer on the boys. The Falcons opened up the scoring in the first half after Danny Cho passed smoothly slotted the ball into senior Dylan Enseling who finished it off. Cho had himself a game, tallying two assists. The next two goals were put in by MVP Sam Durand. One of the goals was assisted by senior Alex Pinel, and the other by Danny Cho. The Mustangs mounted a bit of a comeback late in the game, scoring one and then keeping up the pressure and getting another chance right after. With the score at 3-1, Sam Cooper scored one more to keep the Falcons firmly in control of the game.

The defense played very well for the Falcons. Senior captain Patty O’Neil had a fantastic game, stepping up to make big plays and helped keep the Mustangs out of the net most of the game. Pruthvi Chodisetty also played well on the back line. Senior Matt Hayes had a great night in goal, making clutch saves and commanding the defense.

Sam Durand won the MVP award for his two-goal performance in the finals, and Matt Hayes won the sportsmanship award. This is the team’s second state title in three years. Four of this year’s seniors were a part of the 2016 team and now have two rings.

Congratulations to all of the members of the State Championship winning 2018 men’s’ soccer team!
