Captain Marvel Movie Review
April 1, 2019
On the first week of its release to the box office, Captain Marvel grossed 350 million dollars in North American sales. Needless to say, it has been wildly successful. However, the film has seemingly fallen under scrutiny on the internet. Many have criticized it for being a simple movie. Read below for two staff writer’s opinions on whether the move was a hit or a miss.
Personally, I thought the movie was great, but it did follow the Marvel formula a bit too much. It was interesting and enjoyable from beginning to end. Marvel once again proves that they can do origin stories for their superheroes better than anyone else can. The visual effects in the movie are some of Marvel’s best, displaying incredible growth from Iron Man or Captain America: The First Avenger. The plot was fun to watch, and there was a nice twist in the end. This twist changes fans’ outlooks on the bigger scale of the MCU. I’m extremely excited for how Captain Marvel fits into Avengers: Endgame.
The characters in the movie weren’t entirely fleshed out, but, as a viewer, I understood all of their motivations clearly. Marvel has clearly established that they can follow a formula to the brink and still provide an extremely interesting experience for the audience. This movie is packed with humor, great action scenes, a wonderful soundtrack, and great compositions by Pinar Toprak, the first female composer for Marvel. I’m not very well versed in the origin of Captain Marvel, and have never been fully invested in her character. I was at first apprehensive about this movie, given my inherently limited interest, but I am now very excited to see how Captain Marvel affects the MCU.
Final Review: 8/10
