Broken hearts, shattered phones, and a mass amount of used tissues were left in the wake of Nicki Minaj’s shocking recent announcements. This past Thursday, Nicki posted a surprising tweet saying that she has “decided to retire &  have my family”. This blindsided Nicki fans, causing some to share their feelings on Twitter. One fan expressed that  “You … never left us so hurt your entire career. We’re just hurting Nicki.” Another took a more lighthearted approach at conveying their pain and wrote, “Convincing myself that Nicki Minaj is simply dropping an album called I’m Retiring To Focus On Having A Family”. Even our own peers have something to say! When asked her opinion on the topic, 10th grader Shea McIntyre voiced that she is “disappointed that I will have to rely on Super Bass.”

The astonishing announcement wasn’t the end of the controversy. On September 8th, Minaj hit us with another tweet. After a fan expressed confusion regarding her current situation, Minaj replied “I’m still right here. Still madly in love with you guys & you know that. In hindsight, this should’ve been a Queen Radio discussion & it will be. I promise u guys will be happy. No guests, just us talking about everything. The tweet was abrupt & insensitive, I apologize babe.” Leaving fans confused and discombobulated, Minaj has implied there is something to discuss. Many of her admirers are daring to assume this means she will not be retiring. Some are going as far as to conclude that she is just promoting a fifth album.

After contributing so much to rap, supporters everywhere would hate to see her retire. Beginning her career as a female rapper in a male dominated field, she made her mark by providing an example for fellow female rappers, by mixing aspects of pop and R&B in many of her songs, something less popular at this time. In contrast with her debut mixtape, they are praying playtime is not over.
